Bow Tuning

Useful links to help with tuning your equipment

Follow the steps in a good tuning guide to set-up your kit to get the best out of it for you.  Best done when you are shooting consistently, and if outdoor, on a calm day!

World Archery (formerly FITA) are the sport's international governing body and have some excellent guides to tuning your recurve bow.

Steve Ellison's bow tuning guide is a slightly simpler manual to tuning and is an excellent introduction to getting the best out of your equipment.

Not sure which arrows to purchase?

Materials

  • Most recurve beginners will start with aluminium arrows (like the Easton XX75 ranges e.g. Platinum).
  • Composite arrows (Aluminium-carbon eg Easton ACC) are more expensive, but are good for longest distances.  Handle with care as carbon splinters are nasty.
  • All-carbon arrows are available, but not permitted at our range.
  • And of course, longbows use traditional wooden arrows.

Spine

The Easton Arrow Selection charts a useful tool to help you select the right spine .  You need to know your bow poundage (on the fingers when you draw it, remember - not necessarily the same as the poundage label on your limbs) and your draw length.

The charts also give details such as weight and diameter for their arrow ranges (like the XX75 and ACC mentioned above).

Watch this video to see why spine is important and at just afer 6 minutes in see what happens with a severely underspined arrow!
